Find the image you captured before relying on a thumbnail or upload

A screenshot in Steam's gallery, an image file on your computer and a shared Community post answer different questions. Confirm the file and a separate copy before reorganizing your captures.

For still images captured through Steam on a computer. Operating-system captures, another app's captures and game recordings can have different locations and controls.

Locate the actual image

  1. Open Steam's screenshot or recordings-and-screenshots manager and select the relevant game and capture. Menu labels vary by client version. Confirm the scene and capture date instead of choosing a similarly named game or thumbnail.
  2. Use the selected capture's option to show its local file in the system file manager, when available. Open the image there and check its contents and dimensions. A small thumbnail is not a substitute for the full image.
  3. If you cannot locate that file, check the computer and account used for the capture and whether another app took it. If the manager offers export as a new file, export and open the result. This provides a copy to inspect, not proof that the original file remains. Do not treat game-save Cloud status as screenshot-backup confirmation.

Preserve a copy, then decide what to share

  1. For a located local image, copy it to a separate folder you control, keeping the original. Open the separate copy or export and check the scene and dimensions; label an export as an exported copy unless its original properties are verified. For protection against device loss, keep a verified copy on another device or storage service too.
  2. Before sharing, inspect the image for chat, names or other details you do not want to disclose. If editing is needed, work on a copy and inspect the result. Review the audience offered by the sharing control before confirming it.
  3. If you already uploaded the image, check that individual Community item's visibility and the image it contains. Keep local preservation and online audience as separate records. An upload badge is not proof of a verified independent backup.

Two different kinds of missing image

Visible locally, not shared

Illustrative case: the local image opens and its separate copy matches, but no upload was made. You have verified local files; you have not verified a Community post. Choose whether to share rather than uploading merely to locate the file.

Community image, missing local original

Illustrative case: an uploaded picture is visible online, but the original file cannot be found on this computer. Preserve an available copy and inspect its dimensions. Do not describe it as the recovered original without that evidence.

Preservation is not recovery

This guide does not recover deleted files, guarantee original quality from a shared copy or establish what a delete command removes. Do not delete captures as a troubleshooting step; confirm separate copies and current client instructions first.

Locate and open the actual image, verify a separate copy, then check the audience of any shared version.
