Decide the next refund step before more troubleshooting adds playtime

A refund question has several parts: who sold the game, what kind of purchase it was, whether the standard conditions fit, and what happened after the request. Keep these checks separate.

For ordinary games bought on the Steam store. DLC, bundles, gifts, in-game purchases and other sellers need their own policy checks. This page cannot decide a claim.

Identify which conditions apply

  1. Find the purchase in your own Steam account and confirm the seller, date and item type. Steam does not refund purchases made outside Steam, such as a key bought from another retailer; contact that seller about its process.
  2. For an ordinary Steam-store game, the standard policy is a request within 14 days of purchase with less than 2 hours of playtime. Check both conditions. Exactly 2 hours is not less than 2 hours; a low playtime does not remove the purchase-window condition.
  3. If you want a refund, avoid adding playtime merely to test more fixes. Offline playtime counts too; use Steam's recorded time rather than your own estimate. Outside the standard conditions, you may still submit a request for review; approval is not assured. Check the current policy for special purchase types.

Submit the right request and read its status

  1. In Steam Support, select the relevant purchase and refund issue. Explain the reason accurately and choose an offered refund destination. Review the request before submitting; never share passwords, payment details or purchase records in public discussions.
  2. Keep the confirmation and inspect the request's current status in Support or its email reply. Submission, approval and credited funds are different states. A pending request does not establish a decision; pending funds after approval describe a later step.
  3. If approved, check the stated destination and the timing in the response. If the expected credit does not arrive, follow up with the request details through the appropriate support channel. If declined, read the reason and provide relevant missing facts rather than treating this guide as proof of entitlement.

Apply both conditions and track the outcome

Recent purchase, short playtime, request submitted

Illustrative case: a Steam-store game was bought 5 days ago and played for 1 hour. Those facts fit the standard time conditions, but submitting the request does not mean the refund is approved or credited. Check the actual response.

Short playtime, older purchase

Illustrative case: the game was bought 20 days ago and played for 1 hour. Low playtime alone does not fit the standard window. A request can still be reviewed, but this page cannot predict its outcome.

Policy scope and exceptions

Special purchase rules, abuse restrictions and applicable consumer rights may affect the outcome. Check the current Steam policy and the response for your purchase; do not apply the ordinary-game summary to every item.

Match the seller and purchase type, check both time conditions, and track request, decision and payment separately.
