Will this game work without internet? Test the whole journey

A downloaded game and a working title screen do not prove that your intended session works offline. Prepare while you still have a connection, then test the game mode and saved progress you need.

For an installed game on a computer you control. This is a preparation guide, not a list of guaranteed offline-compatible games.

Prepare while a connection is available

  1. Check the game's store requirements and publisher instructions for a separate launcher, account activation or ongoing internet requirement. A single-player label does not prove that no online service is required.
  2. Sign in to Steam online and retain the login information on your own device. Complete pending game updates and launch the game once to finish its initial setup. Do not sign out or clear saved credentials before testing.
  3. Open the game mode and save you intend to use, then exit normally. If that progress is on another device, first confirm that the correct save is available here. Steam Offline Mode cannot fetch a missing cloud save.

Rehearse the session you need

  1. Use Steam's Go Offline command and follow its prompt. Then test without a network connection while you still have a way to reconnect. The friends-list Invisible or Offline status does not perform the same test.
  2. Exit Steam normally and restart it while disconnected, then launch the game and load the intended save or mode. Check actual play, save and quit normally where supported, then reopen to confirm progress. Record any separate login or server requirement.
  3. If Steam itself cannot start offline, reconnect and check login preparation. If only the game or a mode requires a server, follow its publisher's requirements or choose another activity. After reconnecting, inspect sync status and any conflict before playing the same save elsewhere.

What did the test establish?

A menu opens, but the chosen mode needs a server

Illustrative case: the title screen appears offline, but starting the selected mode asks for an online connection. The menu test passed; the intended session did not. Prepare another supported mode or game before travelling.

The game runs, but the desired save is absent

Illustrative case: a local new game starts, but yesterday's progress exists only on another computer. Confirm the correct save while connected and repeat the offline test. Reinstalling does not establish that the missing progress has arrived.

A successful rehearsal has limits

A successful test applies to that device, installed version and tested mode. It does not guarantee indefinite offline access, future updates, online multiplayer or every third-party launcher.

Verify the requirements, prepare online, then test actual offline play and the save you need.
