A detected controller, a working action and a matching icon are different checks

A controller can appear in Steam while a game expects a different input. It can also perform the right action while the screen shows an unfamiliar button. Follow the connection between the physical press and the game before changing settings.

Two invented teaching examples, not controller measurements or compatibility records. This page does not inspect your device or change its settings.

The game binding changed, but the controller layout did not

In this example, the gameplay layout is active. A normal press sends only its listed output, with no extra commands or alternative Jump bindings.

Recognition passes; the mapping and game binding disagree.

Steam Input can translate a physical button into a keyboard input. Changing the game's Jump binding does not, in this example, update the supplied layout. Sending E would align this particular chain; changing a picture alone would not. This is a conclusion from the stated bindings, not a diagnosis of an untested controller.

Next useful check

Compare the active gameplay layout with the game's current binding. Preserve the previous settings, change one relevant setting if needed, and check that action in a safe practice area. Menu layouts may differ.

Device recognitionSteam detects the controllerDetection alone does not establish the game's bindings.
Active layoutBottom face button → keyboard SpacePressing this button sends Space in the example.
Current game bindingJump → E; Space is unassignedThe game now expects E for Jump.
Why does the supplied input chain fail to invoke Jump?
  1. A detected controller must already match every game binding.
  2. The layout sends Space, but Jump now requires E.
  3. Changing the displayed button picture will change the sent input.

The layout sends Space, but Jump now requires E.

The action works, but the symbol is unfamiliar

Read this invented practice-room record. Native support and an in-game button-symbol setting have not been checked.

A working action does not settle every compatibility question.

Gamepad emulation can present Xbox-style input. A game can still use Steam's support for device-specific symbols, so emulation does not make matching icons impossible. The given A prompt establishes neither a hardware fault nor whether this game offers another icon style. One successful jump also says nothing about vibration, gyro or every menu control.

Next useful check

Keep the working layout while checking this game's controls or official help for a button-symbol option and its exact controller requirements. Do not assume the option exists or that turning translation off will preserve input.

Recognized devicePlayStation controllerThis is the device Steam recognizes.
Known active mappingBottom face button → gamepad AThe layout sends a translated gamepad input.
Supplied observationOne press jumps once; the prompt shows AThat action works here, while the displayed symbol differs from the physical button.
Which conclusion is supported?
  1. The tested action works; matching symbols and other features remain separate checks.
  2. The different symbol proves the controller is broken.
  3. Disabling Steam Input guarantees matching symbols in every game.

The tested action works; matching symbols and other features remain separate checks.

Follow one button through the chain

  1. Identify the physical button and the currently active layout; record what that layout sends.
  2. Compare that output with the game's binding, then observe the intended action separately from its displayed symbol.
  3. State the narrow result and the remaining unknowns before changing a setting. Preserve a working configuration for comparison.

What these examples cannot establish

Support can differ by game, controller, connection, active layout and feature. These examples do not certify any real combination or guarantee a repair.

A displayed icon alone does not reveal the full input path. Keyboard layouts, external remapping and different menu or gameplay bindings can require additional checks.

Trace the configured input, check the action and read the icon separately. Change the part the evidence identifies.
