Choose the Steam operation that matches the problem

An installation, a saved playthrough and local modifications are different things. Decide what you need to preserve and what you need to fix before moving or checking files.

For the desktop Steam client and moving an individual game's installation within the same computer. Moving Steam itself or migrating to another computer needs a separate plan.

Choose by symptom, not by the biggest reset

  1. Need the installed game on another drive? Use Steam's storage move. Missing textures or crashes? File verification can check installed game files, but it does not diagnose every cause.
  2. Missing the expected progress? First identify the game's save location and the progress in each preserved copy. Do not treat reinstalling or verification as a way to recover an earlier save.
  3. Before either operation, close the game and use the developer's guidance to locate its saves and preserve a separate backup where supported. Record any mods or custom files and their restoration instructions; do not assume verification preserves modifications.

Move the installation, then confirm the result

  1. Open Steam Settings, then Storage. Add the destination library if needed and check its available space. Changing the default installation location does not move existing games.
  2. Select the source drive, select the game and use Move to choose the destination. Let Steam finish before launching it or disconnecting a drive.
  3. If Steam reports a Cloud sync error, resolve it before playing. Otherwise, launch from the Library and load the intended progress. Check both the installation location and the save you wanted before removing any separate old copy or backup.

Verify files, then retest the same symptom

  1. Restart the computer and open Steam. In the Library, open the game's Properties, then Installed Files, then Verify integrity of game files.
  2. Let the check finish. Run it for one game at a time and avoid other intensive disk work. Some local configuration files can fail verification normally; that message alone does not identify the crash cause.
  3. Repeat the action that originally failed. If the problem remains, record the exact error, when it occurs and what changed, then use the game's support guidance. Do not keep reinstalling without new evidence.

What counts as a successful result?

The game moved, but the save did not move with it

An illustrative game stores its installation on one drive and saves in a separate user folder. Steam moves the installation to another drive. A working launch confirms only part of the task: check that the expected character, chapter or progress still loads, and keep the save backup until it does.

Verification finishes, but the crash returns

The check completes and the same scene still crashes. That is a repeatable unresolved symptom, not proof that the save is corrupt or that the drive must be replaced. Preserve your data and report the scene, error and relevant changes rather than escalating to deletion.

Keep these boundaries clear

Steam Cloud coverage and save locations vary by game. A synchronized current save is not necessarily a separately preserved older state.

This page does not inspect files, perform a move, restore progress or guarantee a repair. Client labels can differ by language and version.

After a move, confirm the installation location and intended progress. After verification, retest the original symptom and investigate anything still unresolved.
